Scary because I was afraid of causing any kind of damage to the expensive equipment inside my PC. It seems the major chip manufacturers caught on to the worries of their customers about damaging their products. These days, most Graphics Processors have built-in safety measures that restrict the changes you can make with overclocking software like Afterburner to values they consider to be safe.

The processors and drivers themselves also continually monitor things like temperature and power usage so that action can be taken to ensure the safety of the product. A great example of this is a thing we know as Thermal Throttling. If a GPU gets too hot, it will automatically reduce its effective clockspeeds to reduce the workload and output of heat until it reaches a level deemed safe. Within just a few minutes it will run a process that will determine the highest stable overclock settings for your graphics card.

The process consists out of the same basic steps as manual overclocking, being: increasing clockspeed by one step, then stressing the GPU to see if this clockspeed is stable.

If the clockspeed is stable under load, the clockspeed will be upped by another step and the GPU will be stressed once more. This process repeats itself until the GPU fails to maintain stability under load.

At that point, the last known stable clockspeed will be set as the maximum value. This process will repeat itself 4 times to cover 4 different Voltage levels. This curve works by matching the values of clockspeeds to corresponding values of voltage that can sustain those clockspeeds. By doing this you will get a curve where higher voltages are required to run at higher clockspeeds.

Out of the box the last few generations of graphics cards have used this curve. What OC Scanner does is to see how far the curve can be safely adjusted to provide higher clockspeeds.

How to get started with OC Scanner Before you start the process of OC Scanner, we recommend that you enable detailed control of your graphics card in the Afterburner settings. You can do that by checking the boxes below.

After this, you can click apply at the bottom and nothing will happen yet. All this does is to allow your graphics card a bit more room to stretch its legs when you run OC Scanner. As mentioned above, setting these sliders to their max values is completely safe as the values are defined by the manufacturer of the graphics chip to be considered safe.

When all of this is done, it's time to start the OC Scanner! Scanning is the actual process described above where the algorithm will determine the highest stable frequency on 4 different voltage levels. This process should take around 15 minutes before presenting you with its conclusions. After running the Scanner, it's recommended to run the Test option.

Usually I would recommend to save the values in a profile as well, in case you want to switch between default values and your OC profile.

You can do this by clicking on the Save Icon on the bottom right of Afterburner. The numbers on the left of the icon will start to flash to indicate that you can choose which number you would like to save this profile under. Once you choose a number by clicking on it, that button will become an active profile. This means you can easily switch back to default values by clicking the reset button, but also load up your OC profile by clicking on the profile number and then Apply.

Congratulations, you have just overclocked your graphics card! That will most likely give you a nice boost in performance in games, however OC Scanner currently only overclocks your GPU.This is a welcome feature for those who would love to get just a bit more out of their cards, but are a bit gun shy about doing the work themselves. While most of us here aren't too worried about the possible problems, there are a lot of people who are.

This feature is for them and it goes great with Pascal. We've already tested OC Scanner with the RTX Ti and found the results to be more than favorable and coming pretty close to our manual overclocks.

We used Superposition in the Stress Test mode for a 5 minute run to gather core clock measurements. We used Fire Strike Extreme for a Synthetic p run to measure variances. We wrapped things up with a quick run in Battlefield V that matched our previous PC Performance testing to see how changes were in an actual gaming scenario.

Letting the OC Scanner do its thing was pretty straightforward so long as you remember to move the power limit slider and hit apply before moving on to gaming. The OC Scanner did a pretty bang up job on nearly matching my manual overclock settings for the GPU core for the GTX but after looking at the results you'll see where maybe tweaking that memory could prove pretty useful.

The first thing we wanted to look at was sustained clock speeds over time so we brought in Superposition's Stress mode and set the resolution to p with high textures and let it go for an average of 5 minutes. In the chart over time we see the manual overclock stay quite a bit higher than the OC Scanner, but the OC Scanner came in remarkably stable once it reached equilibrium and stayed a bit higher than the stock configuration.

The results fell pretty much where expected, nothing earth shattering but a welcome free bump. After that it was time to see how things shaped up in an actual game, so we went with Battlefield V for no other reason than it was sitting there as the last game I've worked with and was practically ready to go.

However, we've stuck with the same run as we've used in earlier articles for performance measurements and walked away pretty pleased with what the OC Scanner delivered. A marked improvement over the stock results and the manual OC only resulted in slightly higher averages while not doing a whole lot for the lower end frames.

Using EVGA Precision X1 you can definitely tell that it's in beta phase still for a reason, since it crashed about 3 times before letting me select the OC Scanner tab, but once I was in it was smooth sailing. In our recent testing of Radeon Adrenalin 's Auto GPU overclockthat was limited to Vega, we were left underwhelmed with the results. It works great, it's straightforward and shouldn't be off-putting to new builders who want to squeeze the most out of their systems without fear.

It's good to see the OC Scanner feature now available on Pascal cards and performing a bit better than I had expected. Now, when can we get it on Maxwell? I always start it in a hour duration first. Keep in mind though, ocsxanner is pretty effective at checking gnu stability, but not as effective at checking memory stability.

And is it the standard driver or DCH driver? Screenshot Did you copy the nvml. Yes I did copy the nvml. Before doing so I was getting a runtime error. The nvml file cleared that issue but not the code 3 what ever the issue is. I'm using the driver downloaded through gfexperience. Any known issues with programs etc?

Copying the "nvml. I'm running the latest win I'll go ahead and try the dch drivers and report back. I assume it's straight forward; Uninstall current drivers, install new package with the dch.

Yes, completely uninstall all the components of the standard drivers 2 restartsthen install the DCH drivers. I didn't have any problems when I switched over to the DCH drivers. I made a clean install with the dch drivers, without the kontrol panel though, but still getting the code 3 error. I'll try again. No pizza. Not only getting the code 3 error but also the runtime error now.

What is code 3 anyways?
